The making of
Take a look behind the scenes of what went into bringing the launch of the Amels 80 to life. This all new video footage below talks you through how the idea became reality!
A Brand New Classic
When it comes to defining what yacht size, design and features you are going to build on spec and why, it’s only natural that the existing fleet of Amels Limited Editions would be the biggest point of reference. Rose Damen, Managing Director of Damen Yachting, explains how the creative process led to the development of the Amels 80.
Rose, is the Amels 80 a logical evolution of the Amels 242 or the big sister of the Amels 60?
“We of course looked very carefully at the successful Amels 242. We wanted to be sure that we kept the winning features of that design. For example, the dedicated Owners Deck with the forward-facing Owners Cabin and a large pool on Main Deck aft. But at the same time, it’s also the perfect step up from the Amels 60. We focussed on keeping the key features Owners really enjoy from the Amels 60, so there was no missing out as they moved up, such as for example, the large Sun Decks. The Amels 80 is the best of both worlds.”
A True Espen Pedigree
For the Amels 80, the Dutch yacht builder turned to the legendary Espen, an exterior designer and naval architect who understands the nature of the sea like no other. Espen is a trusted Amels collaborator who has underpinned his enviable reputation with stellar creativity and passion for detail together with his Monaco-based team.
Espen, what stands out about the Amels 80?
“It turned out to be a very holistic design in the sense that everything seems to be right, starting with a very good GA. It’s a very clear and logical layout and I think we’ve managed to somehow reflect that in the exterior design with relatively simple lines. She just makes sense. She looks right and feels good. A design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she departs the yard. She is everything and more that you expect from an 80-metre yacht.”
A Home Away from Home
To create a custom interior for the Amels 80, the yard turned to Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design – a Dutch studio with an established reputation at the highest level of yacht design. Lead Designer Paul Costerus talks us through the customisable interiors.
Paul, how would you sum up the Amels 80 interior?
“It’s very complete. We have a Beach Club. We have a Spa with a Massage. We have a Gym. We have an Owner Suite with 2 bathrooms, Dressings and Private office. We have Al Fresco dining. It’s a very flexible and usable yacht. It has a style I think will appeal to a lot of people and fits the modern trend in yachting. It’s distinctive and yet still allows plenty of room for Owners to customise and add their personal style. Their own works of art and treasured objects to form the basis of their own personal home at sea.”
A Modern Icon in Every Sense
The Amels 80 is the result of two years devoted to rigorous detailed design and engineering before a single sketch was even released. Product Design Manager Adriaan Roose talks us through this new modern and dynamic design which has been engineered to complement the beauty of nature and designed for today and tomorrow.
Adriaan, what sort of technical or engineering developments are we looking at?
“We wanted to engineer the Amels 80 with nature in mind at every stage. She is being built with sustainable materials and leveraging the most suitable and innovative hybrid technology available today. Our team of naval architects thoroughly analysed the hull’s performance with scale model tank testing and Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis. Her naval architecture has been designed for maximum fuel efficiency – saving on fuel costs while also reducing harmful emissions. By cruising at an eco-speed, the Amels 80 becomes even more efficient. The full displacement hull form has an optimised long waterline with enhanced underwater body and low underwater noise emissions.”
Just a few weeks on the online launch and the first Amels 80’s build journey is now officially underway. On 17 May, the steel cutting of this all new 80-metre Amels Limited Editions took place at Damen Yachting’s hull building location in Galati.
“For all of us at Damen Yachting, the steel cutting of the first Amels 80 is a really significant milestone. It represents the first stage of the build and the start of this new design being transformed into reality. The Amels 80 is a very exciting project to be part of and we are all looking forward to seeing her through the build journey and watch as this new Amels Limited Editions comes to life.” Romke van der Linde, Project Manager Amels 8001.
